Men's Half-Zip Jumpers: Zip-Neck Knits, Explained
A half-zip jumper is a knit with a zip that runs from the collar partway down the chest — the same garment most UK shops also sell as a quarter-zip. The zip is the point: wear the collar up as a stand collar against the cold, or open it over a shirt or T-shirt when the room warms up. It is the most useful neckline in a British winter wardrobe, and this guide covers the zip-neck family as a whole — the half-zip jumpers, the zip-neck polos, and how they differ from the quarter-zip shelf.

Half zip, quarter zip, zip neck: is there a difference?
Honestly, very little. The three names describe the same idea — a knit or polo with a short zip at the neck — and different makers use them interchangeably; the zip on one brand's "quarter zip" can be longer than another's "half zip". What actually separates one piece from the next is not the name but three things: the collar (a stand collar that stays up, or a fold-down collar that sits like a polo), the knit (a jumper-weight cable or marl versus a lighter ribbed polo knit), and the fit (slim or regular). Choose on those, and the label takes care of itself. Our quarter-zip buying guide works through the quarter-zip shelf piece by piece; the rest of this guide covers the half-zip names on it and the zip-neck polos beside it.
The three WARDLEY half-zips, compared
The Gower (£59.00) is the warm one: a marl textured knit with a warm lining and a stand collar, cut in a regular fit. The marl — two yarn shades twisted together — gives it a depth plain knits do not have, and it is the half-zip to wear as your outer layer over a T-shirt, or under a coat on the coldest days. Light Grey, Charcoal and Petrol, in S–XL.
The Dulwich (£59.00) is the textured one: a cotton-rich cable knit with rope cables down the body and sleeves, a ribbed stand collar and a short metal zip. It is a slim fit — the product page lists garment chest measurements for every size, which is the honest way to buy a slim knit: compare them with a jumper you already own, and size up if you are between sizes. Cream, Light Grey, Navy and Black, in S–XXL. Hand wash, as the care label specifies.
The Finsbury (£59.00) is the polished one: a long-sleeve ribbed knit in a polyester, nylon and rayon blend, with a zip neck and a fold-down collar. It sits between a polo and a jumper — the ease of a knit with the finish of a collar — and it is the half-zip that works hardest in smart casual offices and at dinners where a jumper feels underdressed. Navy, Black, Charcoal and Ecru, in S–XXL, regular fit.
The lighter end: zip-neck polos
Not every zip neck is a jumper. The Vauxhall (£39.00) is a short-sleeve polo with a zip-neck placket instead of buttons, in a stretch fabric with a slim fit — the same clean neckline in a piece for milder days, worn with dark jeans or tech trousers. Between the Vauxhall for summer and the lined Gower for winter, the family covers the year; the Finsbury, with its long sleeves and collar, covers the middle.
How a half zip should fit
Three checks. First, the collar: zipped up, a stand collar should sit close at the neck without gaping or strangling; a fold-down collar should lie flat like a polo's. Second, the body: a half zip is worn over a T-shirt or shirt, so it should follow your shape with room for that layer — pulling across the chest when the zip is closed means a size up. Third, the length: the hem should finish around the hip bone, not ride at the waistband. Fit varies across this family — the Dulwich is deliberately slim, the Gower and Finsbury regular — so read the fit note and measurements on each product page, and check our size guide before ordering.
How to wear a half zip
- Open, over a T-shirt: the default. Zip at half mast, sleeves unpushed, with chinos or dark jeans.
- Zipped, over an Oxford shirt: collar of the shirt outside the knit, for the office and smarter lunches. The Finsbury was made for this.
- Under a gilet or coat: the stand collar fills the neckline a coat leaves open. Our gilet outfit guide starts with exactly this layer.
- With tailoring: a plain half zip in navy or charcoal under a blazer, or in place of a jumper with tailored trousers, reads deliberate rather than dressed down.
Half zip or roll neck?
The two high-neck knits do different jobs. A roll neck is warmer and dressier — a continuous collar, nothing to adjust, and the sharper line under a blazer or overcoat. A half zip is more adaptable: zipped up it gives you most of the roll neck's coverage, and unzipped it layers over a shirt collar or a T-shirt and ventilates when the train or the room warms up. If your winter problem is cold, choose the roll neck; if it is British weather changing its mind between the door and the desk, choose the zip. Many men end up with both, in different colours, for exactly that reason.
Frequently asked questions
Is a half zip the same as a quarter zip?
In practice, yes — both are knits with a short zip at the neck, and brands use the terms interchangeably. Compare collar style, knit weight and fit rather than the name.
Can you wear a half zip to the office?
Yes, in most smart casual offices: a plain half zip (the ribbed Finsbury, with its collar, is the safest) over an Oxford shirt or on its own with chinos or tailored trousers. Keep the zip closed or neatly half-open, and avoid sporty logos and bright colours.
What do you wear under a half-zip jumper?
A plain T-shirt for casual wear, an Oxford shirt for smarter settings, or nothing underneath beyond the knit itself on cold days — the Gower's lining makes it comfortable worn that way.
How do I wash a half-zip knit?
Follow the care label on the piece. The Dulwich cable knit specifies hand wash; the general rule for knits is to wash cool, reshape while damp and dry flat.
