Men's layering pieces built for British weather: base, mid and outer layers designed to stack. Start with a heavyweight tee or roll neck, add a quarter-zip, corduroy overshirt or shawl collar cardigan, then finish with a quilted gilet, puffer jacket or chore jacket.
The three-layer rule
Base layer: a close-fitting tee, ribbed henley or fine-knit mock neck that wicks and doesn't bunch. Mid layer: the warmth, a jumper, cardigan, knitted vest or overshirt. Outer layer: wind and rain, a gilet when it's dry and cold, a hooded rain jacket when it's wet, a puffer or overcoat when it's both.
Layering without bulk
Each layer should be slightly roomier than the one beneath it: slim tee, regular jumper, relaxed outer. Keep the thickest layer on the outside and keep collars to one or two: a roll neck under a crew neck works, a shirt collar under a roll neck doesn't. Read the full winter layering guide, overcoat vs puffer jacket and how to wear a gilet, or shop the whole winter edit.
