How to Measure Sleeve Length: A Men's Guide

To measure sleeve length, first check where the size chart starts: the shoulder seam or the centre back of the neck. Measure to the cuff using that same method. Comparing a well-fitting shirt with the garment measurements is usually more useful than relying on a size letter alone.

Start with the measurement the chart actually uses

“Sleeve length” needs a starting point. A measurement taken from the shoulder is different from one taken from the centre back of the neck. Do not compare those two numbers as though they describe the same distance.

Before picking up a tape, look for a diagram or written measuring instructions on the product page. Check the size guide on the product page before choosing.

You will need a flexible measuring tape, a flat surface and a long-sleeved garment whose fit you already like. For a body measurement, another person's help makes it easier to hold the tape in place without twisting.

How to measure a sleeve on a shirt

Lay the shirt flat and smooth it gently. Avoid stretching the fabric or pulling a knitted cuff. Arrange the sleeve so you can follow its upper edge.

For a shoulder-to-cuff measurement, start at the point where the shoulder seam meets the sleeve. Follow the sleeve to the outer edge of the cuff, keeping the tape against the garment. Record both the number and the method, rather than simply writing “sleeve”.

If the chart requests a centre-back measurement, begin at the centre back of the neckline, continue across the shoulder and down to the cuff. Follow any product-specific diagram where its route differs. Measure twice and use one unit consistently when comparing garments.

How to measure your arm

When a chart specifically requests a body measurement, stand naturally with your arm slightly bent. For a shoulder-based measurement, run the tape from the shoulder point, over the elbow and towards the wrist. Use the exact endpoint shown in the chart.

For a centre-back method, the route also includes the distance from the base of the neck across the shoulder. Do not add a guessed amount to a shoulder measurement: take the full measurement instead.

Body and garment measurements serve different purposes. A garment includes the shape and room intended by its cut, so a body measurement is not automatically the finished sleeve length you need.

Check the whole shoulder and sleeve together

Try the garment with your arms relaxed, then reach forwards and bend your elbows. As a practical fit check, look for comfortable movement and cuffs that do not need constant repositioning.

A dropped shoulder moves the sleeve's starting seam down the arm. A shorter seam-to-cuff number can therefore still produce a long overall sleeve. Ribbed cuffs can also sit differently from buttoned shirt cuffs. Treat these as reasons to compare similar garments, rather than expecting every sleeve to measure identically.

Apply the method to everyday outfits

The Chelsea Oxford shirt has a button-down collar and regular fit. For an outfit, try it with plain trousers and compare its fit with a shirt you already wear comfortably. Check the size guide on the product page before choosing.

The Aldgate long-sleeve T-shirt is a regular-fit, cotton-jersey crew neck with full-length sleeves. It provides a different base layer to check when planning an overshirt outfit.

The Barbican corduroy overshirt has a relaxed fit and buttoned cuffs. Try it over the intended base layer so your movement check reflects how you will wear it.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start measuring sleeve length?

Use the starting point specified by the chart: commonly the shoulder seam or the centre back of the neck. Record which method you used.

Should I measure my body or an existing shirt?

Follow the chart. Compare garment measurements with a similar shirt laid flat; use body measurements only when the chart requests them.

Should my arm be straight when measuring?

For a body measurement, keep your arm slightly bent unless the chart instructs otherwise. For a garment measurement, follow the sleeve laid flat.

Does a dropped shoulder change the measurement?

Yes. The seam begins farther down the arm, so seam-to-cuff measurements cannot be compared directly with a conventional shoulder seam.

Can I work out sleeve length from a medium label?

No. Sleeve length depends on the garment and its measuring method. Check the size guide on the product page before choosing.

Measure against the shirts you will actually wear: the brushed cotton shirt (£120.00), the brushed flannel check shirt (£49.00), and — for the coat over both — the double-breasted overcoat (£258.00).

Every fit is in the shirts range; the coats to check a cuff against are in men's overcoats.

Measured and ready, the season's knits are gathered in the knitwear essentials.
