Jumpers and cardigans for the man who dresses in layers — knitwear chosen to sit under a coat, over a shirt, or stand on its own through a British winter.

Three places to start: the Fair Isle Quarter-Zip, a Nordic knit whose zip neck layers over a collar; the Shawl Collar Cardigan, an open-front cotton-blend knit with two patch pockets, worn in place of a light jacket; and the Cotswold Cable Knit, an all-over cable cut slim so it sits cleanly under a coat.

At the lighter end of the rail, our knitted polo shirts put knitwear construction into a polo — from £39, in short and long sleeves.

    Knitwear, built in families

A British winter is a knitwear season, and the range is built accordingly — thirty knits in six families, each piece with a clear job. Cable knits for texture, fine crews for layering, roll necks for the coldest days, cardigans that stand in for a jacket, Fair Isle for pattern with restraint, and knitted polos where a shirt feels like too much. If you are choosing your first piece, the Journal's guides do the comparing for you: start with the jumpers that earn their place in a British winter, then go deeper on cable knits and Fair Isle.

    The knits, compared

Shawl Collar Cardigan — £66.00. The hero of the range: a soft cotton-blend knit with an open front, a relaxed shawl collar and two patch pockets. Worn over a T-shirt at home or a shirt out, it does the work of a light jacket without the structure.

Cotswold Cable Knit Jumper — £59.00. All-over cable knit with real depth, cut slim so it layers cleanly under a coat. The cloth is a polyester, nylon and viscose blend, stated on its page. For the sleeveless version of the same idea, the Harrow Cable Vest (£59.00) adds warmth and texture over a shirt without the bulk.

Chiltern Crew Neck Jumper — £59.00. A lightweight, fine-gauge crew in a regular fit — the foundation piece, made to sit over a shirt collar. At the warmer end, the Limehouse Fisherman Rib (£59.00) is a chunky rib knit with a relaxed, dropped-shoulder cut; the Mortimer (£59.00) is a brushed, mohair-look knit, also relaxed; and the Cadogan (£59.00) brings the colour in a textured colour-block knit.

Bloomsbury Fair Isle Jumper — £59.00. Fair Isle bands carried all over the knit, in three colourways — Ecru Multi, Blue Multi and Rust Multi — sizes S–XXL. For the quieter version, the Hampton (£59.00) keeps the pattern to the yoke only, on a plain oat body in the single Oat colourway, sizes S–XL. Both are crew necks with ribbed trims in a regular fit; the choice is how much pattern you want to wear.

Marylebone Roll Neck Jumper — £59.00. A fine ribbed knit in a slim fit, made for layering under jackets and overcoats. The Chiswick Mock Neck (£59.00) is its lower-collared sibling — a fine knit with a short stand collar, also slim.

Holland Zip Cardigan — £59.00. A textured knit with ribbed panels, a full-length zip and a stand collar — the cardigan you can wear as a jacket. The shawl collar above is the softer alternative.

Knitted polos. The Finsbury Half-Zip Polo (£59.00) is a ribbed knit with a zip neck and fold-down collar; the Richmond (£59.00) is a wool knit with a classic collar and three-button placket. Both sit between a jumper and a shirt, which is precisely their point.

    Shop by family

Each family has its own shelf: men's cable knit jumpers · men's Fair Isle jumpers · men's roll neck jumpers · men's cardigans. The zip-necked branch of the family lives with the quarter-zips.

    Cloth, stated plainly

Compositions are stated on each product page, exactly as the makers publish them — a blend where the cloth is a blend, wool where it is wool, and no percentages where none are published. Fit is stated the same way: slim pieces are marked slim, and the advice on those pages is to size up if you prefer room.

    What each family is for

For the office, a fine crew or a roll neck under a jacket keeps the line clean; the knitted polos cover the days when a shirt is more than the day needs. For weekends, cable and fisherman rib carry the texture on their own. For evenings at home, the shawl collar is the piece the range is named by — open, soft, and warm without weight. Pattern, where it appears, is Fair Isle: knitted in, never printed, and kept to a band or a yoke so it reads as knitwear rather than novelty.

    Care

Fold knitwear rather than hanging it, rest a piece a day between wears, and follow the label on the garment. The Journal's guide to caring for wool-blend knitwear covers washing, drying and storage in full.
