How Should Jeans Fit? A Men's Fit Guide

Jeans fit at four points: the waist fastens without a belt doing the work, the rise sits comfortably when you sit down, the thigh follows your leg without pulling, and the hem just meets the shoe. Get those four right and the fit name — slim, straight, relaxed, bootcut — is simply a choice of silhouette. This guide explains each point, then compares WARDLEY's seven fits honestly, so you can order the right pair first time. The range runs from £59.00 to £67.00.

  • Five waist-sized fits (W28–W38 across the range) and two relaxed fits in letter sizes
  • Stretch and non-stretch denims — what each does to the fit is covered below
  • Free tracked UK delivery on every order. 30-day returns.

The four fit points

Waist. The waistband should sit at your natural waist and fasten without strain, with room for two fingers and no more. If you need a belt to stop jeans falling down, they are a size big; if the button pulls, a size small. Denim gives a little with wear — a firm new waistband that fastens is right, a painful one is not.

Rise. The rise is the distance from the front waistband to the back, through the crotch. It decides where the jeans sit and whether they stay comfortable seated. Every WARDLEY fit that specifies a rise is a mid rise — the versatile middle ground that works tucked, untucked, sitting and standing.

Thigh and seat. You should be able to pinch a little fabric at the thigh — roughly an inch on slim fits, more on relaxed ones. If the pockets pull open or the denim creases hard across the front, the fit is too tight through the seat, whatever the leg looks like.

Hem. A slim or straight hem should just touch the shoe with at most one small break; a bootcut hem should cover the boot's shaft and stop above the heel. There is no separate leg-length choice in this range, so check the fit notes on the product page and try the hem with the shoes you actually plan to wear — the advice on the Denmark's page, and good advice for all seven.

Archway is the default jean: regular fit, straight leg, three colours (Indigo, Black, Stonewash) — the pair that goes with everything from a hoodie to a blazer. Shoreditch is its everyday twin with a comfort-stretch denim and the widest waist range, W28–W38. Brick Lane is the smart black jean: slim, soft stretch, deep black — the pair that stands in for trousers with a cardigan and boots. Ladbroke tapers to the ankle with a soft washed finish and no rips or distressing — the modern, lighter-looking fit, in Light Blue and Grey. Whitechapel gives you room: relaxed through the thigh in non-stretch cotton denim, falling straight. Waltham is the comfort outlier — a wide straight leg on an elasticated drawstring waist, denim that wears like joggers. Denmark is the bootcut: slim through the hip and thigh, flaring from the knee to sit over boots, in Washed Black, Black, Indigo and Slate Blue.

Which fit should you choose?

  • For smart casual: Brick Lane in black, or Archway in indigo with a knit and loafers. Our guide to wearing jeans smart casual covers the combinations.
  • For every day: Shoreditch or Archway — straight legs that take trainers, boots and loafers without thinking.
  • For a modern, tapered line: Ladbroke, especially with knitted polos and minimal trainers.
  • For comfort first: Whitechapel for room in a proper jean shape; Waltham when the day asks for joggers but should look like denim.
  • For boots: Denmark — the flare from the knee exists to sit over a boot shaft.

Stretch or non-stretch?

Five of the seven have stretch in the denim — slight (Archway, Ladbroke), comfort (Shoreditch), soft (Brick Lane) or medium (Denmark). Stretch buys you movement and a closer fit that stays comfortable seated; it also means the waist gives a fraction over the first wears, so a firm fasten when new is correct. The two non-stretch fits (Whitechapel, Waltham) hold their shape exactly as cut and feel more like traditional denim — size them as they are on day one, because they will not give.

Sizing, honestly

Five fits are waist-sized, from W28 on the Shoreditch to W38 on the Archway, Shoreditch and Denmark; the two relaxed fits (Whitechapel, Waltham) use letter sizes instead. The standing advice on our product pages is: order your usual waist size for the straight fits, and if you are between sizes, size up for a relaxed fit. For trouser fits beyond denim — pleats, tapers, waistbands — our trousers fit guide is the companion piece, and the size guide gathers the measurements. If you need a garment measurement that is not listed, email support@wardleylondon.co.uk before ordering; we would rather answer than process a return.

Frequently asked questions

Should jeans feel tight when they are new?

Firm, not tight. A stretch denim will ease a fraction in the first wears; a non-stretch denim will not. If you cannot sit comfortably or the pockets pull open, they are too small, whatever the label says.

How do I find my waist size?

Measure a pair of trousers or jeans that fits you well, laid flat across the waistband, and double it — or measure around your natural waist and order that size. Between sizes, size up.

Can jeans be worn smart casual?

Yes — dark, clean, rip-free jeans with knitwear, a shirt or a cardigan and proper shoes are smart casual in most UK settings. Black slim jeans (Brick Lane) are the easiest version.

Do these jeans come in different leg lengths?

The range is sold by waist or letter size rather than by leg length, so check the fit notes on each product page and try the hem with your shoes. Straight and slim hems that just meet the shoe need no alteration for most men.
