Men's overcoats, chosen properly. Five coats, each cut for a different job: the long double-breasted coat for the commute, the tailored longline for dressing over a suit, a slim stand-collar coat for a sharper line, a mid-length peacoat for smart weekends, and a belted trench for wet pavements. This page explains how to choose between them — length, cloth, fit and occasion — in plain terms. For the full treatment, read our complete guide to men's overcoats in the UK.

    The coats, compared

    • Hampstead Longline Overcoat — £198.00: single-breasted, three-button front with a clean notch lapel and welt pockets. A cotton and polyester blend, fully lined with a cotton lining, cut long with room to sit over a suit jacket or a chunky knit. Camel, Black, Navy, Light Grey or Charcoal.
    • Greenwich Double-Breasted Overcoat — £258.00: wide notch lapels, a six-button front and a half-belt detail at the back. A wool-finish polyester cloth with a polyester lining, in a regular fit cut to layer over a jumper. Charcoal, Black or Camel, in sizes S–XXL.
    • Marlow Double-Breasted Peacoat — £258.00: the shorter coat of the range. Double-breasted with notch lapels and flap pockets, fully lined, finishing at mid-thigh. A brushed polyester with a textured, wool-look finish. Tobacco or Grey Brown, in sizes S–XXL.
    • Embankment Belted Trench Coat — £278.00: a double-breasted trench with a storm flap, epaulettes, belted cuffs and a self belt, cut to just above the knee. Polyester; a coat for showers and wind rather than waterproofing. Stone, Navy or Black, in sizes S–XXL.
    • Pimlico Stand Collar Wool-Blend Coat — £358.00: a lapel-free stand collar over a single-breasted, three-button front, with a quilted lining and an inside pocket. A wool blend — 25% wool, 63.3% polyester, 11.4% other fibres — cut slim to mid-thigh. Black, Grey or Navy, in sizes S–XL.

    Length, explained

Length decides what a coat does. Mid-thigh coats — the Pimlico at 80–86 cm and the Marlow at 84–88 cm — move easily, sit well in a car and suit a shorter frame. The Embankment trench finishes just above the knee (86–94 cm), the classic trench proportion. A full-length overcoat changes the whole silhouette: the Greenwich measures 95–103 cm depending on size, falling below the knee on most men, and the Hampstead is cut long in the same spirit. If you wear tailoring through winter, the longer coats cover a suit jacket completely; if your days are mostly knitwear and denim, mid-thigh is easier company. Our guide to longline overcoats works through the proportions in more detail.

    Cloth, stated plainly

We describe every cloth exactly as it is. The Pimlico is a true wool blend, with the fibre breakdown published on its page. The Greenwich is a wool-finish polyester — it has the look and structure of a wool coat, and its maker does not publish an exact fibre percentage, so neither do we. The Hampstead is a cotton and polyester blend with a cotton lining. The Marlow's brushed polyester has a wool-look texture but contains no wool, and the Embankment's polyester shell shrugs off showers without claiming to be waterproof. If cloth is your deciding factor, our overcoat buying guide compares the options honestly.

    Fit and layering

Four of the five coats are a regular fit, cut with room for knitwear underneath; the Pimlico is the exception, a slim fit that sits closer — size up if you plan to layer over thick knitwear. Every product page publishes its garment measurements, so compare them with a coat that already fits you over the clothes you intend to wear. Between sizes, take the larger: an overcoat should fasten without pulling when you sit down.

    Which coat for which day

For the working week and anything tailored, choose the Greenwich or the Hampstead — both cover a jacket, both keep a clean line buttoned or open. For a sharper, more minimal wardrobe, the lapel-free Pimlico sits neatly over a roll neck or a shirt. The Marlow is the weekend coat: shorter, easy over jeans, still smart enough for dinner. And when the forecast is wet rather than cold, the Embankment trench is the one to reach for. If you are still deciding, our roundup of the best men's overcoats in the UK puts the range side by side.

    Looking after an overcoat

Follow the care label in the garment first. Beyond that: hang the coat on a wide, shaped hanger so the shoulders keep their line, brush it down after wear, and give it a day's rest between outings. Empty the pockets before it goes away for the season.
