To measure inside leg on trousers, lay a well-fitting pair flat and measure from the crotch seam down the inner leg seam to the bottom of the hem. Keep the fabric smooth without stretching it. Record the result and unit; waist size alone does not tell you the inside-leg length.
Choose a useful reference pair
Start with trousers whose length you already like. Ideally, choose a pair similar in shape to the ones you are considering. A cropped, tapered trouser and a longer, wider style are different references even when both fit comfortably at the waist.
You will need a flexible measuring tape, a flat surface and somewhere to note the measurement. Fasten the trousers and smooth out folds. If you usually wear the hem turned up, decide whether you want to record that worn length or the full unfolded length. Label the result accordingly so you do not confuse them later.
Measure along the inner seam
Lay one leg straight enough to reveal its inner seam. Put the beginning of the tape at the seam junction at the crotch, then follow the inside seam to the bottom edge of the hem. Do not start at the waistband or measure down the outside edge of the trousers.
Keep the tape against the fabric without pulling the leg longer. Take the reading again to check you started and finished at the same points. Record whether you used centimetres or inches.
Separate length from waist size
Inside leg describes a length. A waist label describes something else. The Putney slim tapered chinos, for example, list waist options from W30 to W38. Do not read W32 as a promise of a particular inside leg.
Similarly, S, M, L and XL are not inseam measurements. The Camden tapered stretch tech trousers list these size options and provide waist guidance. Choosing a larger waist size is not a reliable way to choose a longer leg.

Compare the shape as well as the number
The Camden is described as having lightweight stretch fabric, an elasticated drawstring waist and a tapered leg. The Putney has a slim tapered leg, belt loops and a button-and-zip fly.
Use your reference trousers to decide how the hem should sit with your footwear. For a casual outfit, combine tapered trousers, a quarter-zip jumper and clean low-top trainers you already own. This is a styling suggestion, not a measurement or guarantee of where the hem will sit.
For another combination, consider Stone Putney chinos with a Black Belgrave quarter-zip. Before choosing, compare the available fit information with your own trousers. A product photograph can show the intended styling, but it cannot give your personal hem position without the relevant measurements.
Check the size guidance before you choose
Check the size guide on the product page before choosing. Use the WARDLEY size guide to check your measuring method.
Do not infer a short, regular or long option from a photograph or a waist range. Your measurement is useful because it gives you a consistent comparison, not because it automatically identifies a size. Keep it alongside the name of the reference pair and a note of how you wear the hem.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I start measuring inside leg?
On a pair of trousers laid flat, start at the crotch seam junction and follow the inner leg seam to the bottom edge of the hem. Keep the fabric smooth without stretching it.
Is inside leg the same as waist size?
No. Inside leg measures length along the inner trouser seam. Waist sizing describes a different part of the fit and does not establish how long the trouser leg is.
Can I measure trousers instead of my body?
Yes. A well-fitting pair gives you a garment measurement to compare with another garment measured the same way. Choose a reference pair with a length and shape you like.
Does a medium size tell me the inside-leg length?
No. A medium label does not establish an inseam measurement. Check the measurements for the exact style and size rather than assuming a standard length from the letter label.
Where do I find WARDLEY trouser sizing?
Each product page lists its size options and fit guidance, and the WARDLEY size guide explains how to measure. Compare them with a pair of trousers you already wear.
