Tech trousers promise a lot: comfort of joggers, look of proper trousers. Most pairs fail at one end or the other. Here's what separates the good from the gimmicky.

1. Fabric first

The fabric should stretch without going shiny. Four-way stretch lets you move; a matte finish keeps them looking like trousers, not gym kit. Check the composition — a cotton or poly-blend with elastane is the sweet spot. Avoid anything that feels plasticky; it won't age well.

2. Fit is everything

Tapered is the modern cut: room through the thigh, narrowing to the ankle. Too slim and they look like leggings; too loose and the "tech" reads as sloppy. The ankle should sit just on the shoe — no pooling fabric.

3. The details that matter
