Man wearing a smart casual Oxford shirt

What Is Smart Casual for Men? A Simple UK Guide

"Smart casual" turns up on office handbooks, wedding invitations and restaurant websites, yet nobody ever defines it. The good news: it is simpler than it sounds. Smart casual means one step up from what you would wear on the sofa, one step down from a suit. You look put-together without looking like you are about to pitch to investors.

The smart casual formula

Almost every smart casual outfit follows the same rule: pair one smarter piece with one relaxed piece, then keep the colours calm.

  • Smarter pieces: tailored trousers, chinos, Oxford shirts, knitted polos, roll necks, overcoats, loafers and Chelsea boots.
  • Relaxed pieces: dark straight jeans, crew-neck knitwear, overshirts, clean trainers, quality tees.

Neutral colours such as navy, black, stone, camel, grey and olive make everything easier to combine. Add a single texture (cord, cable knit or brushed cotton) and you are done.

What smart casual is not

  • Sportswear: joggers, gym tops and running trainers.
  • Anything faded, stretched or heavily branded.
  • A full suit and tie. That is business formal.

5 smart casual outfits that always work

1. The office default

A Chelsea Oxford Shirt with the Putney Slim Chino in stone, and the Savile Loafer. Add the Belgrave Quarter-Zip when the air-con kicks in.

2. Dinner in town

The Marylebone Roll Neck in black, Henley Pleated Trousers and the Bond Street Chelsea Boot. Put the Hampstead Overcoat on top in winter.

3. Weekend smart

A Mayfair Knitted Polo, the Shoreditch Straight Jean and the Carnaby Trainer. Relaxed, but still the best-dressed man at brunch.

4. Smart casual wedding guest

Swap the jacket and tie for a knitted polo or a crisp Oxford, pleated trousers and loafers. Always check the invitation. If it says "lounge suits", wear a suit.

5. The job interview (creative or tech roles)

The Chiswick Mock Neck under the Greenwich Double-Breasted Coat, with chinos and Chelsea boots. It looks sharp without trying too hard.

Is jeans smart casual?

Yes, if they are dark, straight or slim, and free of rips. Pair them with a shirt or fine knit and leather-look shoes to keep the balance on the smart side.

Can I wear trainers?

Clean, minimal trainers in white, black or a neutral suede-look are acceptable in most smart casual settings. Leave running trainers at the gym.
